If you’re travelling in the European Union, the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) can enable you to obtain free or reduced cost state-provided medical treatment. This card replaces the old E111 card.
The EHIC is not an alternative to taking out standard travel insurance, as it doesn’t offer the same level of cover, and neither will it cover you for private medical care. It’s still an invaluable card to have whilst travelling through Europe, however, and can ensure you avoid having to pay huge medical bills in an emergency, when combined with travel insurance.
It is easy to apply for the EHIC card, which can be done simply by filling out an online form. Once you have your card, be aware that it is only valid for five years, so you will need to renew it again before it expires. You need to be a UK citizen to apply for a card.
An EHIC card does not cover more than one person, so if you have children they will need to have their own card. Applying for a child EHIC card is simple and straightforward, and follows a similar process as if applying for an adult EHIC card.
Applying for a European Health Insurance Card
You need to be over the age of 16 to apply for an EHIC card. If you are the parent or carer of a child under the age of 16 and in full-time education, you can apply for a child’s EHIC card for them. If you aren’t the child’s parent or carer, you’ll need to get permission from the parent or carer in order to apply for the card. This may apply, for instance, to teaching staff at boarding schools. Only children that reside in the UK are eligible for the EHIC card.
When you apply for a child EHIC card you’ll need to fill in a simple online application form. This will include the parent or carer’s details, such as name, date of birth, home address and national insurance number. You will also be prompted to enter details of the child or children that you are applying for, including full name and date of birth. If you’re renewing a child’s EHIC card, you may need to provide a PIN number, which is the number that is shown on the existing card.
Applying for a childs EHIC Card
If you are applying for an EHIC card for yourself, you can normally add children to the application form as dependants, rather than completing separate forms. Remember, your child will receive their own EHIC card, however.
Once your application has been received, you’ll get a confirmation. The application will then be checked and verified. The time it takes to receive your child EHIC card can vary, but should normally be with you in around a week, although this may be longer during busy periods. Always make sure to apply for your child’s EHIC card in plenty of time before you travel. You can apply for a new EHIC card up to six months before the old one expires.
